5 Profound, Yet Simple Ways Juicing Can Transform Your Life

If you’re familiar with drinking freshly-squeezed juices, I think you already know the powerful effects it can have on your body. What most people don’t notice are the effects it can have on the non-physical you.

Four years ago I had my first real date with juicing. You see, I bought an Omega 8005 Juicer and started throwing everything in it. The results were interesting, but not particularly tasty. You live and learn.

After awhile I decided to go on a juice fast, which is where I noticed the 5 subtle, yet profound ways juicing can transform your health and consciousness.

1. Intuition

Intuitive knowing sounds mystical, but for me it’s just a feeling or thought that suddenly bubbles up. When I’m doing something I might get a thought or feeling helping me decide which apple to buy or even which country to live in.

When I was on my juice fast my intuition became stronger. It was interesting, almost like having someone there to help guide you through life.

2. Courage

Fear penetrates even the most hidden parts of our lives. We tend to look at fear with fear, but how much would your perspective change if you looked at it with a fresh pair of eyes? Because what is fear? For me fear just shows me where my belief systems are not aligned with who I want to be.

Two of my biggest fears are public speaking and not having enough financially. When you go deeper and observe them, they are really not as big, bad and mean as you think they are. This awareness is amplified many times when you’re juicing and it allows you to break through these barriers and exercise courage.

3. Clarity

As you put less and less strain on your body, it starts to cleanse, detoxify and heal, which leads to enhanced clarity, focus and other mental functions. During my juice fast and when I juice daily I notice more clarity and an increased ability to make decisions.

Clarity is not only important in making decisions in your day to day, but in your life as well. What is your life purpose? What is your passion? What would you do if money didn’t exist? As I juiced, things suddenly started to become a lot clearer. Now, I am not saying I know everything about my life, just that it got a whole lot easier ;).

4. Awareness

Meditation is an awesome awareness expander, but cleaning up your body does that too. I remember walking down a quiet road in Spain (I lived in Spain then and will again soon, but that’s another story) and noticing new trees.

Had these trees appeared out of nowhere? How did they grow up so fast? I finally concluded that it was my awareness that had expanded. It’s almost as if I had been awarded the keys to a new world, the world of hidden trees.

(Editor’s Note: Maybe some of those trees were planted through my Tree Planting Initiative. If you could go back and in time, and all that. Ahem.)

5. Gratefulness

I was never the grateful type when I was younger, but as I’ve gained a few pearls of wisdom throughout the years I’ve noticed that being grateful feels awesome and is extremely uplifting.

If someone as anti-gratitude as me can become 87% more grateful on a juice fast, I’m sure you would notice it even more. How did I come up with 87%? I made it up, don’t you just love statistics?

To Juice or Not to Juice, That is Not the Question

Raw Food Benefits For Mothers: Edition #5

In keeping with my mission to help people understand raw and living foods better, I’ve decided to start a weekly series here on Raw Food Switch.

This week with Mother’s Day just gone by, I chose to focus on raw foods for mothers. Moms can most definitely benefit from raw foods, whether they go all raw or not. I’m not a mom, so many of these benefits are those reported by friends and other raw vegans.

1. Increased Breast Milk

If you’re a new mother having a hard time providing breast milk for your child, you will be pleased to know that raw food can help. You don’t need to go all raw in order to get the benefits of raw food, and provide enough milk to your children.

Simply drinking 8-16 ounces of green leafy juices every day will help you produce more milk. Here’s a simple recipe that you can use and adapt:

  • 5 Leaves of kale, swiss chard, romaine lettuce, bok choy, or other green leafy vegetable
  • 2 Stalks celery
  • 1 Apple
  • Half a lemon

You could also add some carrots, cabbage, or more apples to change the taste!

2. Weight Loss After Giving Birth

Every woman wants to be able to get back to their slim selves after giving birth. Sometimes it’s a lot easier said than done.

If you’ve been eating a high percentage of raw foods before and during your pregnancy, you won’t have much to worry about.

On the other hand if you put on some weight that’s just not coming off, be gentle with yourself and take the transition to raw foods slowly. You don’t want to experience detox while you are breast-feeding.

Just know that incorporating more raw foods, green smoothies, and salads in your diet will get you where you want to be. Oh, and that little thing called exercise too, but you’re smart and you already knew that. ;)

3. Reduced Post-Partum Depression

Be sure to eat enough chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, and other nuts & seeds before, during, and after your pregnancy. These foods give you tons of healthful Omega-3 fatty acids, that prevent post-partum depression.

Plus if you continue to feed your brain with these healthy oily nuts and seeds, you will be able to better deal with stress.

Being a mom can be a stressful job, so give your brain the ability to “shut down” the stress response when it needs to with these Omega-3 foods!

This week I’m going to highlight some of the Raw Food Benefits for college students, since I’ve been there myself. These are just some of the benefits, please post any benefits you’ve experienced in the comments!

1. Raw Food Provides Energy To Study

Or to pull all-nighters, as the case may be.

I discovered raw and living foods about 2 years into my 5 year University degree. As soon as I started to include more raw foods in my diet, I realized how much more energy I could have.

When you’re a college student, you are constantly on the go: you’re either doing assignments, working on group projects, or studying for midterms and finals.

The more energy you have to keep going, the better you will do.

Let’s face it, a lot of people in college drink far too much coffee and energy drinks to artificially boost their energy. Not being dependent on these harmful, addictive substances can save money, and prevent long term side effects.

2. You Get A Flexible Food Schedule

Being able to blend a meal within a few minutes really saved me a lot of time.

I was able to make a green smoothie for breakfast, or whenever I didn’t have time to make something more involved.

I knew I was getting the nutrition I needed because I was adding lots of green leafy vegetables, and supplements. These smoothies gave me the energy I needed, and took less than 10 minutes to make.

You can also schedule your food preparation for the whole week in advance. You can make a few simple recipes on Sunday that are ready to go for most of the week.

For example, I used to make an herb salad with sunflower seeds on Sundays after my grocery shopping. I could bring some of it with me for lunch for a few days, hassle-free.

3. Mental Clarity

When you’re giving your body the fuel it needs to concentrate, it’s much easier to learn and apply what you learn. I went raw gradually, and my grades improved along with my transition.

Whereas I was an average to below-average student in my first two years, I quickly increased my grades to above average. I graduated from University with Distinction, and I can honestly say that my diet is partly responsible.

Waking up to go to early classes wasn’t a problem for me anymore. A green smoothie in the morning was enough to keep me satisfied until lunch. For lunch I ate a raw meal and never felt groggy or tired for my afternoon classes.

This really helped me to focus during classes and absorb the information I was being taught.

4. Improved Immune System & Overall Health

Every winter college students tend to get sick, and fall behind. Since most University students get by on very little sleep, lots of caffeine, and pizza, it’s no wonder that colds spread easily.

No one wants to be sick during midterms, finals, or big projects. Although eating a predominantly raw food diet isn’t a guarantee against colds, it does help to keep your immune system humming.

It’s much easier to do well in your classes when you’re healthy. You aren’t going to miss class because of a passing flu, and you can devote your energy to your studies instead of fighting off viruses!
