6 Ways Juicing Can Help Persistent Acne

You wouldn’t know it by looking at me today- but I struggled with terrible acne for over 15 years!

I tried everything under the sun to clear my skin until one day (after a particularly awful dermatologist appointment) I decided to throw everything out that I had learned about acne and I decided to heal myself, from the inside-out.

I embarked on a healing journey; I became a fitness instructor with a focus on nutrition and I researched everything I could about the mind/body/food connection. After a lot of studying and trial and error- I was finally able to clear my acne naturally. I’ve been acne free for almost 5 years now, and I want to help you heal as well!

As I learned more about the food/body connection, I discovered 3 of the biggest causes of acne were blood sugar imbalances, digestive imbalances, and hormonal imbalances.

I wanted to address these imbalances head on, so one of the first things I did was to start drinking green juices. It worked wonders for my skin and I want to tell you why!

Here are the 6 ways that juicing helped clear my acne and how it can help you clear yours!:

1. Juicing helps to keep your blood sugar levels normal.

In the typical American diet, we start off our normal day with a bagel, cream cheese, coffee with milk and sugar. While this might be tasty, this breakfast causes a huge spike in your blood sugar. Blood sugar is intimately tied to your acne; higher blood sugar in your body means more of the hormone insulin. More insulin means excessive cell growth at the root of all of your hair follicles- which is part of the sequence of events that causes acne in the first place.

So, what can you do? Start your morning off with a super low sugar green juice instead – try my morning green juice below – to avoid such a huge blood sugar spike first thing in the morning.

2. Juicing helps to get your digestive enzymes flowing.

So many people that I see with acne have some type of digestion problem. It’s usually one of two issues; either they’re not using the bathroom enough and their body is in toxic overload or they’re using the restroom way too much and their body isn’t absorbing nutrients from their food.

What can you do? If you’re having problems with the, ahem, “flow of things”, grab a green juice with beets in it. It’ll start things “movin’ “, (if you know what I mean :), and help to remove toxins.

3. Green juices are super anti-inflammatory.

Our bodies function the best when there is an even balance between acid and pH. However, when our body is more acidic it tends to show up everywhere and usually in our skin. One of the best ways to bring more pH into our bodies is by adding in more veggies.

What can you do? Besides drinking a veggie juice every day, add ginger into the mix as well. Ginger is an anti-inflammatory and can also help to boost your immune system. This way you’re getting two for one: the anti-inflammatory properties of the veggies plus the ginger.

4. Juicing helps you stay hydrated.

When you have acne you’re most likely putting creams on your face and using medicines that completely dry your skin out. The result can be an itchy dryness that can sometimes even make you break out more, and can slow down the healing process after a breakout.

What can you do? Try a juice with 1-2 cucumbers (peeled if they’re not organic). Cucumbers are made of mostly water and as a result, can help your skin stay hydrated.

5. Juicing helps to balance hormonal levels.

Hormonal acne is one of the most common types of acne that there is and as a result, everyone wants the “secret recipe” to healing. However, hormones are one of the most complex systems in your body and require a delicate balance of many bodily systems.

What can you do? As long as you’re grabbing one green juice a day, you’re on your way. Your hormones are deeply affected by your blood sugar and digestion. And since juicing helps both of these stay normal, you’re good to go!

6. Drinking green juice help you create better habits.

This was one of the most important ways that drinking green juice helped to clear my acne. Once I started every morning with a green juice, my day felt different. I felt more energized and didn’t have such a huge sugar craving at around 10:30 (sound familiar?!) when my blood sugar was crashing. I felt more focused and tuned in. This felt good, so I started to change up other little habits throughout the day which eventually led to bigger and more important healthy habits that led to more acne clearing.

What can you do? Start one good habit today (drink a green juice!). Just one though, don’t overwhelm yourself because you’ll get burned out. Start with one habit today and watch little habits over time become big ones.

Jill’s Morning Juice:
1 green apple
1 bunch kale
3-4 stalks celery
1 cucumber (peeled if not organic)
Juice of 1 lemon
Handful of parsley
½ inch ginger peeled

Jill’s Summer Lovin’ Juice:
1 handful kale
1 handful spinach
1 green apple
2-3 pieces of pineapple
Blend with avocado.

There are many magical benefits from consuming leafy green vegetables:

  • Rich in fiber, an important nutrient for optimal digestion, weight loss, and controlling hunger;
  • Helps lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and temper blood-sugar swings;
  • Contains a lot of water to help keep you hydrated;
  • Contributes to beautiful skin and hair;
  • May help ward off depression and improve mood

You likely already know all this but struggle with how to make greens fit in without any drastic change to your current lifestyle.

Regardless of what Kermit the Frog has told you, eating more greens can be easy without sacrificing taste.

 

Here Are 3 Simple Magic Tricks To Eat More Greens Painlessly:

#1 – “Chop The Crop”

Sometimes I just want to eat a “normal” meal– not a salad– and sometimes I feel too lazy to chop my veggies by hand. On days like these I gently pulsate my greens in my blender or food processor and throw them into whatever hearty dish I happen to be cooking.

This “chop the crop” technique greatly reduces the volume of my greens. With this method, I can easily get in lots of leafy greens without feeling like I’m eating lots of greens. Plus, it only takes a matter of seconds to chop and toss into any meal.

Here are two of my favorite meals that use the “Chop the Crop” method:
Kale Pesto Pasta
Super Fast Kale Salad

If you’re not a fan of kale by all means switch it out with spinach or another leafy green you love.

#2 – “Green Drink Packs”

If you’ve never tried green smoothies and juices before, they can sound like drinking lawnmower pulp or swamp water. I assure you they’re not. In fact they can be a super way of adding in your greens without tasting them.

But even if you know that you like green smoothies or juices – when you’re busy, sometimes the idea of pulling out multiple ingredients to make a green smoothie or juice can feel overwhelming.

“Green Drink Packs” are so simple to make. One day a week I create 5-7 “packs”. Here’s how you make them:

For smoothies, I use a large plastic baggie that includes all my ingredients to make one green smoothie recipe. I make these packs in bulk and stack them neatly in the freezer. That way when I need a super fast meal or snack, all I have to do is pop a Green Drink Pack out, maybe add some water to the blender, and voila! Literally 2 minutes to make a meal.

For juices, I use an 8-10 cup container, and place all my ingredients to make one green juice recipe. I usually lay the greens first, and use the weight of the cucumber, celery or apples to compact the greens. I also make these in bulk for the week and stack them in my fridge. It takes about 15 minutes max in prep time, but saves me about 15 minutes each day.

Drink Packs are perfect for when you’re busy or on-the-go. You’re getting handfuls of fresh fruits and veggies that without blending or juicing would be time consuming to eat.

Here a few Green Drink Pack ideas to get you started.

#3 – “Roll With It”

Have you discovered that even with the best of intentions that salad that you brought to work gets ditched as you head for the deli? Especially at lunch time we tend to crave foods that we can eat with our hands…pizza, sandwiches, wraps, etc.

Why not change it up a bit and use your leafy greens as the base of your wraps and sandwiches. Fill them as you would any other store bought wrap. Or toss in some of your leftovers for a quick meal.

Collard greens, and Swiss chard are two of my favorites to make wraps with because they are large and can easily fit lots of fun fillings inside. You can also use tender butter leaf lettuce and make smaller wraps.

Sure, it’s not quite the same as eating with bread, but you’re also eliminating the wheat and gluten, which converts to sugar and adds on weight.

Icy Pole Recipe

Nothing in the world is more refreshing than an icy pole on a hot humid day.

The weather this past week here in Australia has been so stifling and thick with humidity that even a dip in the sea wasn’t cooling down my internal thermostat.

After walking through the city streets, I went into a convenience store to buy a lemon icy pole.

Gluten?! In an icy pole? What?!!

Not to mention the lengthy words, explaining ingredients which are difficult on the tongue and very confusing on the brain. Especially a brain compromised by extreme heat.

That was it.

The moment that changed my world.

It is often said that wonderful learning comes from adversity.

Yes, we can all agree that finding gluten in my icy pole on a stifling hot day is not really an extreme adversity.
However, in that moment…
That one sweaty instance… I was not a happy chappess (is that a word?).

Bring back the homemade icy pole!

This recipe is so easy even I could make it (not to mention small children).

This recipe is so clever! Imagine how cool (ha ha) you will feel offering your friends a freshly made icy pole from your freezer.

And, most important, this recipe will free you from having to bring potato salad to a BBQ ever again (really, what more could you wish for!).

Icy Pole Recipe

  • Bits of sliced fruit
  • Juice of choice
  1. Slice bits of fruit and put them in your icy pole containers.
  2. I like to use anything we have on hand, really.
  3. Blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, mango…we have even used lemon! Very refreshing, indeed.
  4. Pour the juice in on top of your fruit.
  5. Feel free to water down the juice, if you want or need to.
  6. Or, freshly juice some of your own with any leftover fruit you may have in the fridge (apples and oranges work quite well). Sometimes we even use a bit of coconut water…… yum yum!
  7. Put your lid on top.
  8. Smile.
  9. Stick in freezer.
  10. Feel clever and proud.

You have just created a gift of real food for yourself, your friends and loved ones that will be enjoyed and appreciated.

Three Simple Fasting Juice Fasting Recipes That You Will Absolutely Love

Having a bunch of fasting juice recipes ready when you’re about to go on your raw, healing juice fast can come in handy. Many use fasting as a tool to lose weight, and I don’t blame them. It often works a lot better than the majority of the diets out there.

Fasting not only cleanses your body internally, but it also detoxifies your body and increases your health tremendously.

If you want to get an extra boost out of your enema, it is usually recommended that you do a small enema before you start to clean out the old stuff.

When you’re juicing, you aren’t getting any fiber or solids into your stomach, so you have to get rid of the old somehow, right?

These recipes are the ones I use the most and they are very simple. I like keeping things simple and I am sure our bodies like that, too.

Healthy Recipe #1 – Orange and Carrot Blend

This is probably one of the juices I drink the most. Whenever I get cravings for something sweet I make one of these and it always satisfies my body.

All you have to do is grab as many oranges as you want and when you’ve juiced all of your oranges, add a few carrots. You can vary the amount of carrots you put in depending on what flavor you want.

I typically put in 2-3 medium sized carrots and that gives the orange flavor a nice boost.

Healthy Recipe #2 – Green Orange Mania

This is a recipe I make because I have to get some greens in my diet! Vegetables are very cleansing internally and they are like a retreat for your soul. So you need to get those greens in and this is my way of doing it.

You can take any vegetable, but let’s go with celery and kale. If you were to juice those two and drink it, it would taste pretty bad, and I don’t know, maybe some people like it, but I don’t!

Juice your greens and at the end add a few oranges and it will improve the taste tremendously and it will be a lot easier to drink. And best of all, your body will get the nutrients it needs.

Healthy Recipe #3 – Pineapple and Mango

Are you starting to notice that my fasting juice recipes tend to only contain two or three ingredients? I’m sorry, but that’s the way I have been doing things for a few years, and it works!

I like keeping things simple, but I by no means discourage your from trying your own recipes. Throw in whatever you want in your juicer and see how it tastes. That’s how you learn.

For your pineapple and mango fasting juice recipe all you have to do is peel your pineapple and mango, slice both into small chunks that fit into your juicer and juice away.

I sometimes like to include a carrot right at the end because my juicer can get clogged when I use squishy fruits like pineapples.

[Editor’s Note, Nathalie Says: I don’t recommend juicing fruit on a regular basis, or drinking lots of juiced fruit but if you do juice fruit keep to this rule: only juice fruit with other fruit, except apples, pears, and lemons/limes which can be juiced with veggies. Try to make the majority of your juice consist of vegetables, especially if you have sugar issues or suspect you’ve got a sweet tooth.]

Keep It Simple

Like I said, I like to keep my fasting juice recipes simple, because it means I have to use less brainpower to make them, and to clean everything when I’m all done.

There are tons of great juice recipe books out there, and I’m sure you can find more than plenty online as well, so don’t be shy to trying new things.

Now it’s time to look at the practical reasons why juicing will impact your life in an amazing way.

1. Liquid engineering for your body.

The life-giving juice found in fresh fruits and vegetables is nutritionally way beyond anything humans can manufacture. I’m not just talking about junk food, but anything from bread to bottled juice.

Unfortunately, 95% of what you find on supermarket shelves is practically devoid of any nutritional value. The various methods we use to process our food are robbing it of its benefits.

This is why juicing is so wonderful. You can take the nutritional power from as many different fruits and vegetables as you want and feed it directly into your body. This truly is liquid engineering.

2. Boost your energy.

Think of the tired feeling you get after a heavily-processed meal. That happens because your body has to redirect energy to your digestive system… not something you really want. And who wants to eat food that makes them tired anyway? We eat and drink because we’re trying to replenish energy, not spend it.

Enter juicing. One of my favorite things about it is that you are doing the body’s digestive work for it. No more feeling sleepy after a meal. Now you get a burst of energy and your body will thank you for it.

3. Sleep better.

When you sleep, your body is recharging itself. Before processed food was invented, this was no problem.

But in today’s world of nutritionally bankcrupt food, this doesn’t happen like it’s meant to. Rather than recharging, the body has to focus on digestion and squeezing whatever vitamins it can find out.

By juicing (and by eating raw food in general) you hand the power of sleep back over to your body. Rather than digesting food, your body can get back to sleeping which means a smoother and more restful night.

4. Wake up early.

It goes without saying that if you don’t sleep well, you’re not going to get up early. So as you feed your body with more life-giving juice, you’ll wake up earlier with more energy for the day.

5. Feel great.

If you’ve experienced how good you feel when you eat good food, then you won’t need any convincing here. Simply put, the better you eat (and drink), the better you feel.

6. Look fantastic.

When you feel great, you look great.

7. Lose weight.

Much of what causes weight gain is found in unnatural and highly-processed foods that don’t have any nutritional value.

When you juice and your body is filled to the brim with powerful nutrients, all of its natural processes will step up a notch. Yes, this means your metabolism, digestion and immune system will function much more effectively.

Don’t forget all the extra energy you are going to have to get rid of somehow. That “somehow” is best known as exercise – the movement that produces endorphins and makes you happy.

8. Eat less.

When you are eating food which is rich in nutrients, your body isn’t going to need as much to be satisfied.

9. Prevent cancer.

Fruit and vegetables are essentially warehouses of antioxidants. These babies make up the army inside you which fights cancer. They eliminate cancerous growths and make sure your body is in tip-top shape.

Sure, you can get antioxidants from eating carrots. But think of how much faster it’ll be if you drink them.

10. Get more done.

More energy is naturally going to mean that you get more done. Whether you go surfing, paint a picture or write a business plan, it doesn’t matter. The point is that you’ll be doing more of what you want to do which can only be a good thing.

11. Enjoy life.

An old arabic proverb says “He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything.

I can’t really think of a better way to put it. The healthier you are, the more you are going to enjoy life.
