The Most Important Asset Of All… Is This

Guest Post By Karen Landriau

When Nathalie posted  “Accounting is Sexy”, I knew I had to read it because it triggered a “Whaaaat?” reaction in me.  If this got you curious too, you can read it here. She mentions the two (2) most overlooked parts of business and I’m adding what I believe to be the MOST overlooked, the SEXIEST of them all: You.

Without you there is no business.

Taking care of yourself  is actually an integral part of your business and that contributes to its growth.

If you don’t put yourself as a priority in your business it will suffer.  When your health is optimal EVERYTHING is easier.

Good news, bad news

The good news is, your body  & mind usually don’t break down overnight.  The bad news is … well, they don’t usually break down overnight.  And this is one of the reasons we keep putting ourselves last on our list.  It isn’t one mishap but the daily little actions that we take that make us healthy or not.  Whether your overload of toxins produces symptoms such as headaches, weight gain, bloat, acne, cough, pains & aches or moodiness, they all play a role in how your business is doing.

When you keep ignoring them over time, they start affecting your business slowly slowly until you can’t do it anymore because that cold has got you glued to your bed, your foggy mind can’t focus on that deal/strategy and you just can’t decide what the right thing to do is, you get impatient with a major client and blow that relationship, you get burnt out and just lose your drive.   This isn’t why you started your business.  Okay, maybe a bit melodramatic but you get the point and these things happen at different degrees.

As a business owner, everything is your responsibility.  Isn’t it even more important to be at your optimal health since everything is dependant on you?  If your mind is not totally focused, clear, and able to handle the challenges how long do you think your business will last?

Now, I know.  You‘re super busy and things really need to get done so what’s a driven entrepreneur to do?  Here are 3 easy strategies that you can implement today without thinking about it too much to keep you and your business healthy.

Go for quality over quantity

You have children and/or tight deadlines and schedules and can’t go to bed early enough so, at least make it count when you close your eyes at night.  Have that room completely dark.  I mean pitch black dark, “can’t see your hand in front of your face” dark.

The darkness  allows your body to produce the hormone melatonin needed to help the internal natural rhythm of sleep.  Disruption in melatonin production may affect how your body stores fat and potentially lead to weight gain.  There are studies that even link the lack of melatonin with premature aging, cancer & heart problems. Now, does any of that sound good for your business?

Here’s how you can maintain darkness during sleep:

  • Get blackout curtains or a sleep mask
  • Put a towel on the floor at the bedroom door to prevent the light from the other side/hallway to come through under it
  • Cover your digital clock and put a towel over it

Ok, maybe the mask is not the sexiest for your partner but definitely the sexiest when you wake up looking all refreshed and not snapping at anyone.

The Trifecta effect

IMG_3091This one is not talked about enough.  Did you know that the air inside your office or home is most of the time more polluted than outside?  And if you wonder how that affects your health, just ask someone with asthma or someone that had mold in their house how much quality air is important? You don’t need those major problems for quality air to affect you.

When you stay indoors for long periods of time you keep breathing the same air.  That air becomes stale. Your body needs fresh air to be fuelled. When you get more oxygen to your brain, the clearer your mind becomes.

Over time,  if you keep breathing in stale air you may get various symptoms like headaches, tiredness, sluggishness.  Also, fresh air is essential for keeping your immune system strong, so without it, you may get frequent colds.  I’ve never heard of increased productivity at work during  a cold, have you?

Going outside and getting some fresh air is the 3 in 1 perfection.  The fresh air provides oxygen to your brain & every cell in your body.  And, you’re probably not just standing around breathing, hopefully you went around the block for a short walk,  you moving a bit contributes to increasing your blood flow and that means more energy & oxygen and more oxygen helps your brain operate better!   The third benefit is that you get some sunshine at the same time, even if the skies are overcast, it’s still triggering your skin to produce some Vitamin D which is good for the immune and nervous system and the brain.  Makes me want to step outside right now!

Last but not least

IMG_2824How can I not talk about hydrating properly when it has such a big affect on your energy, your hunger, your skin, your digestion, you immune system & your mind!

Your impaired mental abilities are the first symptoms of dehydration. Do you think your business runs smoother on a dehydrated brain?

Although we all know we should drink more we don’t always do it.

So the best way, the easiest way to incorporate this into your daily life is to start your day with 8 to 16 ounces, room temperature water, as soon as you wake up!

Whether you put the glass on your nightstand, the counter in the bathroom or the kitchen counter right in front of the coffee machine,  drinking water first thing just helps your body and mind get started in the morning.

Bonus points if you added fresh lemon juice to it (no plastic juice please!) but not necessary.

Progression versus perfection

IMG_3854One step at a time.  You won’t be perfect every single day.  It is the daily little actions that count and make a big difference. So choose one strategy, just one, choose the easiest for you to integrate during the week and do it for one week and see the benefits for you and your business in only 7 days.

When you’re healthy, you have a happier disposition, you see things differently, you make different choices and you can handle the challenges better.  When you’re in your optimal health state you are the next level of you.  So tell me, how can your business not be affected by that?  How are you not the most important & sexiest asset in you business?  Do yourself and your business a favor and start treating yourself like the sexiest, most important asset that you know you are.

Wishing you prosperous health & wealth!

How to Make Your Butt Look Good By Being Inspired To Move

Hi there–

How to make your butt look good with Theresa StevensMy name is Theresa Stevens and I’m a Samba dancer, a Booty Bumpin’ Teacher & a Pleasurable Fitness Coach. Great job titles, right? :)

If you’re getting into caring for your body by eating whole, nutrient-dense food, and you’re ready to add some exercise into the mix so that you can enjoy all of the smokin’ hot benefits (like how to make your butt look good)…

You may be wondering:

How can I change exercise from something I’m supposed to do into something I WANT to do? And how do I turn it into part of my lifestyle?

Well, first things first, I want to invite you to ditch the word “exercise” and think about the idea of “moving & playing in your body” instead!

I don’t know when we coined the phrase “exercise”… but “exercise” often feels like something that we need to “motivate” ourselves to do.

Shawn Achor, researcher and author of The Happiness Advantage, found that we only have a short supply of “motivational energy” available to us every day! And we can use this energy up pretty quickly, just with simple tasks like getting up early and taking time to make a healthy breakfast.

So what’s a health lover to do?

Here are 5 quick tips that allow you to feel inspired (and even healthfully addicted) to exercise your way to a great looking butt:

1. For a Great Looking Butt: Make Moving More Playful

Want to know a secret about making “exercise” a part of your daily lifestyle? It’s that your body WANTS to move, and it wants to play every single day.

Now I’m not just talking about working out: your body just wants to straight-up move around every day. (Not spend the whole day sitting in a chair!)

It’s part of our animal nature.

And we’ve created jobs and cultures around doing just the opposite. We’re sitting on our butts for way too long at work, on the sofa at night, in our car during the commute… and not enough time shaking our booties!

In fact, I believe that when you can allow your body to move and play everyday… you can get out of your “mind,” which can get mired down with repetitive thoughts, worries, and to-do’s… and into the silent meditative connection of being IN your body.

So it’s time to start giving your body what it loves and craves: lung expanding, heart beating, sweaty pleasurable movement and play.

2. Schedule It & Let Your Body Do The Rest

The idea of “playing and moving in your body” is really fun!

Once you start doing it, your body will actually help you make a healthy habit of it because it loves it so much!

That’s why it’s so important to put your “playful movement” time into your calendar and plan your day around it!

And yes, the first 1 to 5 times you go to do your movement activity, you’re going to have to make a conscious choice to do that, rather than sit on the coach and watch a movie. But after you do this several times, your body will get in line and really help support you because it feels so good!

I find that even when I’m a little tired from thinking too much or working too hard, and I’m supposed to go to a dance class… I know I’m going to feel more energized, more creative, more sensual, more in love with my body. I’m going to feel so much better after I go dance… but I don’t want to go because I feel burned out.

I can hear my mind saying, “Oh I’m so tired. I just want to sit on the sofa.”

But my body knows we’re going to have such a good time! I’m going to feel so much better if I just go.

At this point, you don’t have to “motivate” yourself. You just look forward to it and your body helps you make it a part of who you are and what you do.

3. How to Make Your Butt Look Good By Starting With What You Have

Now the third important and inspirational tip, is that you want to start where you’re at and playfully build from there.

You can get un-inspired to exercise when you do something that’s outside of your current fitness range.

Make Your Butt Look GoodDoes this sounds familiar? Have you ever flipped through a magazine and seen a picture of a fitness model and she has rocking hot abs, these beautiful legs and a great butt?

And you think, oooh, yes I want to have that too. Be careful: you don’t want to jump off the deep end and try to do really intense fitness programs immediately, because that’s when injuries happen. You’ll end up with sore, stiff muscles.

You want to acknowledge where you are with your fitness and movement level.

Make sure that you’re eating nutrient, dense whole foods. Because if you’re not eating whole foods, exercising will actually feel very draining… which is not an inspiring way to feel, at all!

I recommend starting with something like walking every day. Walking is a great way to notice all of the beauty around you, clear your mind, and also release the muscles in your back and hips.

Then as quickly as you can, add to your daily walks by challenging yourself with more fun and playful forms of movement…that are actually more powerfully effective for burning fat and building sexy muscle.

4. Do Something That Works (So You’ll Want To Keep Going)

Nothing is more inspiring than enjoying the RESULTS of your efforts, right? So pick a type of movement that you enjoy and understand why it works!

Once you’ve gotten the hang of eating more real food and getting great nutrition… Challenge yourself and enjoy getting a variety of movement into your life with both aerobic (Interval Training types of movement) and anaerobic (Strength Training types of movement).

Making the best of both kinds of exercise (resistance training and cardio) has been shown to give you the BEST sexy fitness results.

You may be excited to hear that there’s a type of movement that combines BOTH cardio, or aerobic movement, AND muscle-building, anaerobic movement.

It doesn’t take a lot of time to do, and it’s an ancient form of movement that’s very playful and fun!

It’s called Concurrent Training…

It’s been shown through a 2008 research study at the University of California in Santa Cruz and Berkley, to be a significantly effective form of exercise to burn abdominal fat, while building sexy muscle and reducing post-workout soreness! Yes!

I’m into combining “booty-focused” strength training with dancing, because you get great results from simple and sexy movements that gently and consistently “work” the posterior chain of muscles in your body.

When you’re “using your booty,” you start to feel really inspired and committed to doing them!

These movements can feel good on your body and not draining (when combined with eating nutrient-dense foods).

Because these movements are tapping into the power and pleasure of using your *posterior chain* (your booty muscles) you get quick results. When you get fast results and you can see your butt looking better day by day, it’s inspiration to keep working out!

The good news? This style of movement is simple. And you can also really enjoy the PROCESS to getting a great looking butt and body.

5. Feel Sexy & Beautiful Now!

My last pleasurable fitness tip is that you want to escape the stress of disliking your body as much as possible. Make your commitment to movement from a place of loving and taking care of your body, rather than hating your body.

This is extremely important, because when you’re feeling stressed, your body sends out neurotransmitters like Cortisol, that tell your body to hold onto it’s resources, and store fat. This then triggers you to eat foods higher in sugar, causing a downward spiral.

Make Your Butt Look GoodThat’s why if you’re experiencing stress, it will be challenging to lose weight or experience fitness results from what you’re doing.

Disliking how your body is right now is one of the worst kinds of stress. When you catch your eye in the mirror and put yourself down, it can start to feel like a self-made prison that you can’t escape.

Start by loving and appreciating your body, just as it is right now. This in turn will allow all of the wonderful changes you’re wanting can take place to happen more easily.

It sounds like a Catch-22, but if you look for things to love and appreciate about your body, while you’re having fun… it can actually be a much easier shift to make!

And that’s why I believe dancing and booty-focused strength training is so powerful.

When you squeeze and release your butt muscles, the largest muscle group in your body… or you dance in what I call the “African seated dance position,” not only are you in the perfect position to burn fat and build some sexy muscle, but using the largest muscle groups in your body actually triggers a flood of happiness and sensuality hormones, including testosterone and human growth hormone, that help you feel more sensual and free!

When you’re doing booty-focused strength training or dancing I highly recommend wearing an outfit that you enjoy wearing.

Exercising doesn’t mean that you need to throw on your baggiest sweats and oldest t-shirt. When you see yourself in the mirror wearing these old, worn-out things, you’re just not going to feel good about yourself!

Now you don’t need an expensive workout wardrobe either. I just recommend wearing clothes that make you feel good, and make you feel beautiful, when you wear them.

Feeling sensual and free helps you want to exercise and play in your body! Dancing with your hips, and moving what I like to call the “Pleasure Center” of your body really turns on your sensuality, your sense of personal freedom and power… not to mention a fabulous looking butt you’ll love, too.

Let’s Move Together!

Woo-hoo! All right, I hope you enjoyed my 5 Quick Tips to feel “inspired” rather than “motivated” to move your body. And if you would love to learn how you can feel sexy and beautiful in your body right now, and how you can burn fat and build sexy muscle by moving with the “pleasure center” of your body…

From Tired, Overweight, and Depressed to Radiant Beauty with Whole / Raw Foods

Dawnmarie Raw Foods Before & After

This is a guest post by Dawnmarie, read on to hear her story of transformation with raw foods.

The year 2006 was the worst year of my life. My best friend of 15 years and I had a falling out. My Grandmother died. I lost my job. I opened my own practice only to close 9 months later in near bankruptcy because of low reimbursement from insurance companies. My husband left. I found a new partner. He left. My dog was diagnosed with ehrlichia.

My life was starting to sound like a country music song. But perhaps the most devastating news came from my ob/gyn.

You aren’t fertile. Your FSH is too high. You need an egg donor.

Having wanted children all my life, now 37 and without a partner, my chances were quite grim.

Not only would I need a sperm donor, but also an egg donor. There must be a way to restore my fertility.

In addition, at the time, I was taking a pharmacy load of medications:

  • Wellbutrin for ADHD and depression.
  • Lamictal for refractory depression (standard antidepressants no longer worked).
  • Strattera for ADHD.
  • Klonopin for anxiety.
  • Citrucel for my irritable bowel with constipation.
  • Bottles and bottles of Advil for various aches and pains, headaches and menstrual cramps.
  • Glucosamine for joint pain.
  • Coffee to wake me up in the morning.
  • Sleeping aids to get me to sleep at night.

I was 155 pounds, heavy for my 5″7 frame. My cholesterol was elevated. And, I had acne. All of the time. I didn’t recognize who I had become. And I didn’t like her.

Discovering Raw Food

My friend Leslie, at the same time my husband left, decided to “go raw” for a few weeks to do a “cleanse.” I thought this was ridiculous and unnecessary.

Meat and dairy are essential to a balanced diet. Its good for you. Or so I thought and so I had learned.

While my world continued to spiral down, I noticed Leslie’s was improving. She became my emotional rock and she was no longer so fragile.

Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine

She continued to tell me about “raw” and I continued to dismiss her. But for Christmas, to support her, I bought her Gabriel Cousens’ book Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine. And I did myself the favor and read the introduction.

There was one thing that he said that I wanted to hear, you can “change hormone production with a living food diet.

A month later, when I arrived in California for a job so that I could prevent bankruptcy, I “went raw.”

After three months, I was no longer anxious. I didn’t need Klonopin.

After six months, I didn’t feel depressed. I stopped the Lamictal. Several months later, I didn’t need the Wellbutrin, either. Strattera was causing my blood sugars to rise. I stopped it, and they normalized. The Citrucel sat on my shelf.

Eating fibrous foods was not constipating. I wasn’t buying Advil, either, as I no longer ached. I didn’t get headaches anymore. I replaced coffee with green smoothies. I slept well every night.

Testing The Raw Boundaries

One day, early in my raw journey, I was overtired and decided to get a latte prior to work. Within hours, I was doubled over in pain.

All along, I had been lactose intolerant, and didn’t realize it. So that’s why I wasn’t farting anymore.

I lost weight. All of it. And I was back down to my prior college weight of 125 pounds. I looked and felt fantastic.

Although, I was diagnosed with Hashimotos (likely induced prior to going raw, by the large quantities of dairy I used to consume, as dairy promotes autoimmune disorders), my thyroid hormones stabilized quickly, and I haven’t yet needed a prescription for thyroid replacement.

Once I stopped gluten, I no longer had acne.

The Ever After Part…

It’s four years later, and I’m still mostly “raw” and definitely only consume a whole food plant based diet. I feel better now at 41 than I did at 31.

Another fertility specialist just informed me that my AMH is zero and that I have only one follicle producing in my left ovary per month.

He says I need an egg donor and he says I have a non-significant very small external fibroid on my uterus.

My mother lost her uterus to fibroids at 37. I believe had I not turned my diet around, I, too would be getting a hysterectomy.

While all of my other health problems have cleared, the fertility issue is still a challenge. I’m not giving up.

I’ve been to Clear Passages for 30 hours of physical therapy to prepare my ovaries and uterus for pregnancy. (A pleasant side-effect of this treatment, now that my uterus isn’t nailed to my abdominal wall from adhesions, is that I can now orgasm on intercourse).

I’m taking DHEA, which has been shown to improve egg quality and follicular production. And next week, I fly to Seattle to attend Randine Lewiss course for women with reproductive challenges like my own.

Whether or not I become pregnant on my own or by a donor egg, my raw food journey has lead me to a better place, to better health. This physician, healed herself, with a whole food, plant based diet.

Thank you Dawnmarie!

I just want to take a moment to thank Dawnmarie for sharing her story with all of us. It’s amazing what a whole food diet can do, and I am so blessed to be able to share this message with the world!

Love, Nathalie

Holistic Healing Approach: Heal Yourself With Raw Food

Last night I attended a group healing session here in Toronto. The session was called “A night with intention”, and was facilitated by a man with over 10 years experience with energetic healing.

The topics we discussed really got me thinking. First of all, I truly believe that each of us has the ability to heal ourselves.

How else can the body know what to send to heal a paper cut? Why should it be different for cancer, or heart disease?

If you came to raw foods for healing or weight loss, then trust in your body’s ability to return to a whole balanced place.

Raw Food is Only Part of the Healing Puzzle

One thing I’ve really been pondering on a lot lately is the realization that raw food is just a tool. For some cases using raw food to heal yourself is the best choice. In others, maybe a different approach might work better.

I’m not a fan of conventional Western medicine and the emphasis on the quick-fix pill-popping “solutions” it provides. But if I get hit by a bus, send me to the emergency room – don’t try to heal me with raw food or an energetic healing technique.

There’s a time and a place for each of the healing tools we have available to us.

Similarly, there’s something to be said about the placebo effect. If the placebo effect operates in 1/3 of all healing cases, then why don’t we learn more about this miraculous possibility? If I can heal someone just by placing my hands on them, or by jumping on one leg and waving a magick gourd… then why wouldn’t I do it?

Health Promoting Environments

Disease and illness happens over time, it rarely just appears out of nowhere. That’s why I believe that the environment in which we live is just as important as the food we eat.

For example, if you live in a very toxic and mentally damaging environment you’re not likely to feel your best.

Create a safe healing sanctuary for yourself with your favorite plants, relaxing music, comforting smells, and maybe a cushy blanket or pillow.

If there are unsupportive people who bring you down, find a way to let them know their treatment is not welcome or distance yourself from them. This is tough, but sometimes necessary.

Healing Thoughts

This is something that Jonathan Mead and I talked about in our Raw Food Q&A Call. Jonathan said something that really zeros in on one of the biggest pieces of the healthy living puzzle.

“It’s better to be eating something that’s not raw and feeling good about it, than to be begrudgingly eating something raw but feeling horrible.”

This works both ways, if you beat yourself up when you “fall off the wagon” of eating raw foods, you’re inflicting more pain and stress on yourself than the non-raw foods themselves might be.

The thoughts you think and the feelings you feel play such a huge part in the healing process.

If your thoughts and feelings aren’t supporting your healing efforts, it might be time to change your habits or find a practice that takes you out of your head space.

Healing with Raw Foods

I don’t think there’s one right way to go about healing yourself. For me, eating more raw food has been the first step on a journey of whole body and mind healing.

For you, raw food might be step one or step three, it doesn’t really matter. Find what works for you, and go from there.

All I know is that raw food has been instrumental in healing myself and those around me.

What has been instrumental in your personal healing journey?

Love, Nathalie
